Thriving with ALS - The story of Lauren "Lolo" Spencer
I read an article from CNN titled Diagnosed with ALS at 14, she’s now a disability lifestyle influencer. Lauren “Lolo” Spencer is truly living her best life and living it her fullest potential. After being diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the age of 14, she could either of been torn apart and lived in sadness about her diagnoses or try and embrace what was happening to her and advocate for herself. Lolo chose to completely embrace her diagnosis and live joyfully. Five years after being diagnosed she was fully in a wheelchair and that brought her attention to many new challenges regarding community accessibility. Today, Lolo is in her early 30’s so after enduring these barriers for many years she has learned how to access the world around her easier but is a big advocate for community accessibility. She has accomplished many things since her teen years such as becoming a “disability lifestyle influencer” with several platforms including YouTube and Instagram. She is also a fashion model for well knows brands including Adidas and Tommy Hilfiger. Lolo has a passion for representation of all people in the fashion industry and advocates for every single person to have full access to express themselves through fashion and creativity. Every day Lolo is sharing her lifestyle and showing the world how she is embracing her disability and how she can still live a fulfilling life no matter what challenges she faces.
To further my knowledge about someone’s lifestyle living with ALS, I decided to check out her YouTube and Instagram platforms to really dig deep into what her life looks like in detail. There are so many posts she has made about her glamorous outfits, fun outings she goes on, and many tips for those living with a disability. Her platforms show her experiencing the joys of the world and life in general. From this story, I gained a better understanding as to how everyone’s journey with any major diagnosis looks different. Especially with this case, she has ALS and typically this is a fast-progressing disease but for Lolo she has been living with ALS for 18 years and has had a much slower progression than other cases I have heard about. This is important to know because every case is unique, and every person has a different goal/outlook with a major diagnosis like ALS. I was drawn to read this article because I really enjoy following a couple disability lifestyle influencer's, such as Molly Burke who is Blind, but I had never heard of Lolo before, and I really wanted to learn about her story. This article was very insightful and gave me a little sneak peek into her life and why she decided to pursue influencing and modeling as a career.
