Step by Step with GBS
To learn more about Guillain- Barré Syndrome (GBS) I watched a video on YouTube titled Guillain- Barré Syndrome- Miranda’s Journey. This video follows a young girl’s journey as she navigates the effects of GBS. Miranda was in the last couple weeks of her freshman year when she started feeling symptoms of GBS. She was initially misdiagnosed with mono but came to find out it was GBS. Very quickly Miranda lost so many of her motor functions and within a week she was not able to breathe on her own. She entered a plateau phase that was difficult for herself as well as all her friends and family because she was not able to do anything on her own and they hated to see her suffer. After the plateau phase ended, she was making small gains. As everyday went by she was making progress. Miranda made a very long list of things she was looking forward to when she got better, and this kept her motivated to work hard. After 68 long days of recovery and rehab, she was discharged, and the entire community was there when Miranda came home. Miranda had a speedy recovery compared to most people who are diagnosed with GBS and continues to make gains every day. I chose to watch this video because it showed a timeline of recovery and rehab that Miranda went through. I really liked how it showed all the details that went into this journey from community support to Miranda's raw emotions. This video showed me more of a glimpse into the inpatient therapy that goes into GBS which I really liked seeing. I learned that with a diagnosis like this it is important to have intrinsic motivation. In Miranda's case she had so much ahead of her in her life such as college, her career, and so much more. She was intrinsically motivated to get back to participating and embracing her life. To me it seemed that her recovery process took a lot of patience but the fact that it only too her a little over two months while some cases take 2 years is fantastic. She was willing to work for however long it took to participate in life again with the ones she loved. To further my knowledge, I visited the GBS foundation website. On there I learned how much support they give for people who are dealing with GBS in their life. There are some many resources and tips for how to process and go about this diagnosis. I recommend this video especially if you want to see the small victories and what all goes into the process of GBS recovery.
